- Learn to use up leftovers and food that is about to go off - see Recipes for ideas
- Learn to make sauces, much cheaper than buying pots of pre-made.
- Cook in bulk and freeze portion sizes for when you get home from work too tired to cook.
- Learn how to make cheap dishes – baked tatties, spag bolognaise, pasta sauce
- Learn to make pizza bases. Pizzas are great for using up odd bits and bobs in the fridge.
- Eat more vegetables than meat. Learn to cook veg dishes – stir fries are excellent. Bulk out meat dishes (ie. Spag bol) with 'hidden' veg.
- Buy fruit and veg that is in season. Here is a list of what is in season throughout the year.
- Build up a good store cupboard of things that suit your tastes in cooking. Good basics are: tins of tomatoes, garlic, pasta, beans, lentils, flour of all sorts, yeast, sugar, herbs, dried fruit etc.
- Learn to cook cakes, flapjacks, biscuits etc to add to lunches. See recipes for ideas
- Learn to cook for friends instead of going out. Suggest one friend brings starter, you cook main, another brings pudding.
- If you are making two cups of tea, just use one bag!
- Grow your own food. You don't need a large garden or lots of time and energy! See gardening section for ideas.
